For a policy document on culture for the municipality of Deventer, I clearly mapped the Deventer cultural landscape. Five programme lines are visible, in the form of vertical catchment areas, from left to right: the various performing arts facilities, training and practice facilities, heritage and exhibition facilities, visual arts, and language, literature and poetry. Each catchment area portrays all activities and facilities within a given discipline, in their interrelationships. The larger cities are the most distinctive or influential players. Each catchment area covers the whole field: from amateur to professional, from individual to institution, from subsidised to unsubsidised. No single party or activity stands alone. There are numerous influences and collaborations represented by channels, road links and pipelines.
In this way, the coherent fabric of local cultural facilities becomes clear to all concerned at a glance.
